The RTW Story

When they say “London” what do you think of? Yes, the big, bright red London bus. People love it. And of all the big bright red buses ever, the RTW and Routemaster models were most loved. When “they” planned to ditch them, Londoners protested. But as usual, “they” won.Today only a handful of these iconic buses serve the people of London, but now you can enjoy your own RTW bus today!

The RTW was an immediate hit with Londoners and tourists alike. Introduced in May 1949, the RTW became a familiar sight on London streets – although initially it was banned from operating in the centre because its extra width gave the authorities cause for concern. But eventually, just like the people of London, the authorities were won over by this beautiful bus's combination of eye-catching practical design and timeless charm.

An icon of the swinging 60s

But, if Londoners loved this bus, which route brings back most memories? Was it the 22, through Piccadilly, to the swinging King’s Road in Chelsea – past Mary Quant’s boutique? Did Twiggy or the Beatles take it to World’s End? Well, that’s this bus’s route.

A hand-painted scale die-cast metal model made from original moulds available nowhere else. You can “own” this much-loved piece of London’s history. A beautiful conversation piece in perfect miniature detail down to the real rubber tyres, destination board and adverts. It’s a lovely reminder of a bygone age that you will treasure and enjoy for years to come.

Police “banned ” it!

Today, only 8 of the original 500 buses still exist in the UK. Read their story in this fascinating booklet.
