The long hot summer of 1940, vapour trails snaked across the skies of southern England, recording life and death aerial dogfights between the RAF and Germany’s Luftwaffe.
For 4 eventful months only “The Few” stood between us and Hitler’s terror, holding back a seemingly unstoppable attack. The whole world watched and held its breath. But invasion never came, because of the courage of heroic fighter pilots like Douglas Bader, who still flew despite having lost both his legs in a flying accident.
What would have happened if Hitler’s invasion had been successful? What kind of world would be living in today? But Hitler’s bold gamble didn’t pay off. Despite almost overwhelming odds, the ‘fly boys’ of the RAF and their brave allies stemmed the Nazi flow, and put a severe dent in the Luftwaffe’s aura of invincibility to boot.
