But one icy North Atlantic dawn in May 1941 near Iceland that supremacy ended when the mighty Hood, the fastest, longest warship ever built, had one fatal weakness: her armour.

A shell from the Bismarck pierced it, exploding her ammunition. 1,415 heroes went to a silent, watery grave. Only three men survived.

Churchill ordered: “The Bismarck must be sunk at all costs". Just three days later, relentlessly chased by ships and aircraft, she went down with her colours flying. 2,000 brave men were lost.

This was one of the defining naval battles of WWII. The Hood was one of Britain’s best-loved ships and her sinking only strengthened the public’s resolve not to give in to Nazi tyranny. Similarly, the destruction of the supposedly invincible Bismarck showed to all that the German war machine could be stopped.
