The unforgettable RTW Bus
An icon of London loved around the world
All aboard for a trip down memory laneWhen they say “London” what do you think of? Yes, the big, bright red London bus. People love it. And of all the big bright red buses ever, the RTW and Routemaster models were most loved. When “they” planned to ditch them, Londoners protested. But as usual, “they” won.
The RTW was an immediate hit with Londoners and tourists alike. Introduced in May 1949, the RTW became a familiar sight on London streets – although initially it was ‘banned’ from operating in the centre because its extra width gave the authorities cause for concern. But eventually, just like the people of London, the authorities were won over by this beautiful bus's combination of eye-catching practical design and timeless charm.
If you’re lucky enough to ride one of the few remaining ‘open platform’ buses still running in the capital on the ‘Heritage’ number 9 and 15 routes you’re in for a real treat. Not only are they far comfier than those soulless, stop-start driver-only buses brought in to replace them, but they just ‘feel’ right too. And they've got far more charisma than those "new" Routemaster buses they introduced in 2012!
